Tokyopop DVD Review
Omg I actually own a Tokyopop DVD =O I caught it when the "Prize Ninja" was throwing free DVDs out at Otafest on Saturday >=D So I watched it the other day. And let me tell you first hand, what everyone says is so true >.>
When you load it up, the default is of course, the "Tricked Out English Version". So I began to watch some of that. The intro is done completely to some English song, and it's absolutely horrible at that. "Initial Drift! Inital Dream! Initial D!!" in quite a whiny and annoying "voice". Also no tyre screetching sounds or anything like that. Proceed to watching the episode.
Well, every character is horribly dubbed. Usually you get one or two characters who are at least decent or better compared to the original Japanese, but not the case here. These guys are a joke. And, they all use words that are supposedly "cool", like "wicked, sweet, dude, cool, homie, bro" etc, plus their "nicknames" like Zack and Tak and Iggy, etc. In the fold that comes inside the DVD, they have Nakazato's character profile as: Takeshi "Zack" Nakazato. How the hell he got that nickname is beyond me guys =P As for "Tricked Out Action", during the scene with the 86 against the BNR32, the only difference was it showed a Turbo gauge at like 1.2 PSI for a split second then used some splash effect to go back to the usual CG racing. Even the character's personalities aren't right, with Bunta being super cocky and acting all know it all (I never got that impression from the Japanese original myself)... yuck. Oh, and no Eurobeat. Onto the "Classic Japanese" version.
The original intro has no soundeffects either, really losing some of its emotion. The subtitles are pretty sad too, basically they're the exact same thing as what the character says in the dub (they do use the real Japanese names though). In one example, one guy is talking about the upcoming GTR/86 race, and in Japanese mentions the "Speed Stars"... but in the subtitles, there's nothing even about the Speed Stars, nor anything close. I think it goes to show that the subtitles are pretty inaccurate.
I'm sure you all knew, but I just had to get that off my chest =D
We all knew the Dub was ghey,
but i thought the subs would be better, I guess I wont even keep the DvD rips I got from Anime-Xtreme then....
i hate dubs, there to lazy to change the mouths so sometimes theres no voice and the guys mouth is moving. Thats why its good to know other languages
