Are you using irc.firewirez.net or irc.wappo.net ? Its the first one, incase you didn't know.
If its the actual mIRC screwing you over, just get a download of Mozilla (search google for mozilla) and use ChatZilla, the Mo' app. It works fairly well ^^'.
